This was a project I was working on back in 2020-2022, I suppose you could say it was me trying to make my "dream game" when I first started learning how to code! Honestly, I love older Final Fantasy games, Octopath Traveller, Pokémon, etc., and have always wanted to make a turn-based battler.

This idea changed so much over that timeframe to the state you see in this demo. It really was a first taste of, "yeah, but why would I play this over the other turn-based party battlers out there?". That's how I ended up with the Elemental Protection/Boon system, which I think is pretty fun to play around with. Ultimately I'm not sure there's enough "new" stuff here to keep going with it, but I think people who enjoy these types of games will enjoy what's here - it has a lot of different play styles of each character, and it's pretty challenging! Let me know if you beat it and with what party setup!

The "upgrade a character to a new class" was inspired by one of my favourite games, Slice & Dice, but originally it used to be that each character got offered several skills, and you would pick one of them. I found during playtesting that this was very overwhelming for most players - trying to juggle 3 different characters, each with multiple different archetypes that can also synergise with each other was just too much (and this is only 3 of about 12 characters I had designed!!). Players had much more fun just picking a pre-made class. While it does just give you all the tools you need and automatically self-synergises, you still have the micro-decisions of what order to use them in, whether to spend or save energy, setting up for powerful turns, buffing allies, debuffing enemies, etc. And you can still create fun cross-character synergies.

I don't know whether or not I'll return to this kind of game in the future - maybe! It's a pure passion project, for sure. Commercial opportunity? Not sure, sort of hence why I'm putting it up here :)

Disclaimer: Art is obviously placeholder and unfinished. There are no sounds or music. There may be bugs. Very unlikely I'll be updating this any further. Recommend playing full screen to avoid any UI resizing weirdness!

If you like this, maybe you'll like the game I'm actually releasing on Steam in a few months! Please check out and wishlist Chain of Command, coming out Q3 2026: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4439360/Chain_of_Command/
